How does Acupuncture work?

In Chinese medicine, acupuncture is seen as a way to balance the body’s Qi — a vital life energy that travels through 12 major meridians. When Qi becomes blocked or disrupted, it can lead to pain, illness, or other imbalances. Acupuncture helps restore the smooth flow of Qi, bringing the body back into harmony and supporting its natural healing processes.

From a Western medical perspective, acupuncture is thought to work by stimulating specific nerves, which then signal the brain to release natural substances such as endorphins, neurotransmitters, vasodilators, and hormones. These substances can reduce pain, improve circulation, and regulate the body’s systems. While researchers are still uncovering the exact mechanisms, the physiological effects are measurable and well-documented.

A striking example is its use in labor induction. Traditional Chinese medical students learn early on to avoid a small number of acupuncture points during pregnancy, as they are known to strongly stimulate uterine contractions by encouraging the release of oxytocin — the same hormone that naturally triggers labor. Modern studies confirm this effect, showing that acupuncture can shorten the active, painful stage of labor by an average of 3.6 hours, helping to make the birthing process smoother and less stressful.

Beyond labor support, acupuncture is widely used to address a variety of conditions, including chronic pain, headaches, digestive issues, stress, anxiety, insomnia, and hormonal imbalances. Many people find that regular acupuncture sessions not only relieve specific symptoms but also promote a greater sense of overall well-being and resilience.

What is the difference between Traditional Chinese Acupuncture and Dry Needling?

Acupuncturists work with meridian points (also called acupuncture points) to address a wide range of health conditions. Needles are inserted shallowly and precisely at these points to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes. Acupuncture has been shown to be effective for conditions such as musculoskeletal pain, psychological concerns, skin disorders, respiratory issues, Bell’s palsy, insomnia, and more.

In contrast, dry needling is typically performed by a physiotherapist or chiropractor. This technique uses larger needles that are inserted directly into the affected muscle, targeting specific trigger points — sensitive or painful areas within the muscle. Dry needling is primarily used for musculoskeletal conditions and can help relieve muscle adhesions, tightness, and knots, improving function and reducing discomfort.
